Contemporary Chinese Pulse Diagnosis®
One of Dragon Rises College’s defining strengths is its emphasis on Contemporary Chinese Pulse Diagnosis®, based on the pioneering work of John H.F. Shen, OMD, and further developed by Dr. Leon Hammer.
Rather than serving as only a diagnostic tool, pulse diagnosis provides practitioners with remarkable insight into the patient’s overall health and well-being. Students learn how the pulse can reveal:
- Constitutional strengths and vulnerabilities
- Previous illnesses and physiological changes

From the beginning of the program, students build practical skills that culminate in supervised patient care within the Dragon Rises College Acupuncture Clinic. This strong clinical emphasis helps students develop confidence in diagnosis, communication, professionalism, and treatment planning while serving members of the community.
Graduates leave with both the technical expertise and clinical judgment needed to enter professional practice.
Why “Dragon Rises”?
The name Dragon Rises College comes from Dr. Leon Hammer’s influential book, Dragon Rises, Red Bird Flies, which beautifully expresses the philosophy underlying both healing and personal growth.
In Chinese tradition:
- The Dragon symbolizes strength, vitality, wisdom, and the dynamic life force that powers growth and transformation.
- The Red Bird, or Phoenix, represents renewal, awakening, and the continual evolution of the human spirit.
Together, they symbolize the harmonious balance between energy and transformation—the continual evolution of an individual toward greater health, awareness, and purpose.
In Chinese culture, the Dragon is also a symbol of excellence and extraordinary potential.
