At Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine, learning extends far beyond the classroom. One of the greatest strengths of our educational experience is the opportunity for students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while serving the communities around them.
On Saturday, June 20th, a group of Dragon Rises students proudly represented the college at the VA Outreach Event held at the Port Charlotte Town Center. Throughout the day, they exemplified the professionalism, compassion, and dedication that define the future of our profession.
Working alongside DRCOM Clinic Supervisor Dr. Daniele Saint-Cyr, our students engaged with veterans and members of the public, answering questions about acupuncture and educating attendees about the many benefits of integrative healthcare. They shared information about how acupuncture is available as a valuable healthcare option through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, helping increase awareness of this effective, evidence-informed approach to care.
In addition to providing education and outreach, the students actively participated in delivering auricular therapy using ear seeds. Throughout the event, they assisted and treated numerous veterans and community members, offering a simple yet impactful therapy designed to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support overall well-being.
For many students, this experience represented an important milestone in their clinical education. Community outreach provides opportunities that cannot be fully replicated within the classroom or campus clinic. Students gain confidence by interacting with diverse populations, refining their communication skills, and applying their clinical training in a dynamic, real-world environment.
What stood out most was the students’ enthusiasm and commitment to service. They volunteered their personal time on a Saturday to support our veterans and community members, demonstrating maturity, teamwork, and a genuine passion for helping others. Their professionalism and eagerness to learn made a lasting impression on everyone they encountered.
The response from veterans and event attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed appreciation for the treatments they received and gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about acupuncture and the integrative healthcare services available through the VA system. These meaningful interactions reinforce the growing role acupuncture plays in supporting the health and wellness of our nation’s veterans.
Dragon Rises College is proud to provide educational experiences that prepare students not only to become skilled practitioners but also compassionate healthcare professionals dedicated to serving their communities. Outreach events like this strengthen clinical confidence, foster leadership, and remind students of the profound difference they can make through the practice of acupuncture.
We extend our sincere thanks to the faculty, organizers, and the Department of Veterans Affairs for supporting this valuable outreach opportunity. Most importantly, we congratulate our outstanding students for representing Dragon Rises College with excellence, integrity, and heart. Their dedication reflects the very best of our institution, and we are incredibly proud of the positive impact they made on our community.
